Undoubtedly one of the most important empires of medieval Europe was the Carolingian Empire, a powerful state that developed in Central Europe between the 8th and 9th centuries AD. This empire is remembered for its brilliant emperor Charlemagne, considered by many to be the father of medieval Europe. It is also remembered because within its borders three fundamental traditions for the historical development of Western Europe were intertwined: the Christian tradition, the Roman tradition, and the Germanic tradition. The foundations of the Carolingian Empire were laid by Charlemagne's father, Pepin the Short. In 700-51 AD, Pepin became King of the Franks. The Frankish kingdom was a Germanic kingdom that had established itself in Western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire and extended across the present-day territories of countries such as France, Belgium, Switzerland, and parts of Germany. To dominate this kingdom, Pepin sidelined the weakened Merovingian dynasty, who until then had ruled the Frankish territory. He gained the support of the Roman Catholic Church, and thanks to that, he was crowned King of all the Franks. In this way, the Carolingian dynasty took control of the kingdom. A few years later, King Pepin died, so the throne passed to his son, Charlemagne. Charlemagne was a man of strong determination. He had great skills as a warrior but was also a wise advocate of learning. His great goal was to transform the Frankish kingdom into a majestic empire. To achieve his objective, the new king undertook many military campaigns in different parts of Europe. First, Charlemagne led his army to northern Italy, where he defeated the Lombards and took control of their kingdom. Charlemagne made his son king of this new territory, but in reality, he would be its true ruler. Some time later, Charlemagne's forces advanced into northern Spain. However, there his armies encountered the staunch resistance of the Basques. They inflicted a resounding defeat on the Frankish armies, so they had no choice but to retreat. However, this defeat did not stop the Charlemagne's ambitions soon led the Frankish king to mobilize his forces eastward, initiating a new military campaign. This time, the Franks subdued the Saxons and Bavarians, seizing their lands. They then confronted other peoples, such as the South Slavs and the Avars, inflicting severe defeats upon them. Thanks to all this, Charlemagne managed to expand the size of his kingdom. Now, the Carolingian domains stretched across most of Western and Central Europe. After conquering new territories, the king sought to strengthen his position in order to effectively govern his vast empire. But to achieve this, he had to deal with the counts, a group of nobles who had accumulated considerable power during the era when the Franks were ruled by the Merovingian dynasty. Charlemagne limited the power of these counts by requiring them to serve outside their own family lands and preventing them from remaining in a county for life. He also appointed several officials to oversee the activities of In this way, the counts ensured that their decisions would be carried out. Charlemagne also realized that the Catholic Church could be of great help in strengthening his government, so he created new bishoprics and restored deteriorating church structures. He also ensured that the members of this religious institution carried out his orders. The good relationship that existed between the king and the church allowed the king to be crowned Emperor of the Romans by Pope Leo III in the year 800. Thanks to this, Charlemagne became one of the most powerful men of his time, as this coronation placed him on the same level as the Byzantine emperor. On the other hand, Emperor Charlemagne had great intellectual curiosity, so he was a great promoter of learning in the monasteries of the Carolingian Empire. The monks copied the writings of early Christianity and classical Latin authors with the intention of preserving these important documents. Today, around 8,000 manuscripts produced during this period still survive; in fact, 90% of the ancient works The Romanesque symbols we have today have endured because they were copied by Carolingian monks. In 814, Emperor Charlemagne died. After his death, the empire suffered numerous problems that would eventually lead to its disintegration. After the emperor's death, his son, Louis the Pious, inherited the throne. Although Louis was a decent man, he was unable to build a strong government; on the contrary, during his reign, the empire weakened. This period was characterized by the strengthening of the Frankish aristocracy, the constant conflicts between Emperor Louis's sons, and the attacks of Muslim and Viking peoples. Because of all this, once Emperor Louis died, his sons signed the Treaty of Verdun, an agreement that divided the Carolingian Empire into three large territories. Thus came the end of this powerful empire. The western lands of the empire were now ruled by Charles the Bald, lands that would later become the center of the Kingdom of France. Meanwhile, the central lands of the empire would be ruled by the emperor's eldest son, named The notary, while the eastern lands of the empire would now be ruled by Louis the German, domains that over time would become the Holy Roman Empire.
