>> How heavy is this glass of water? Melissa, would you care to answer? >> Um, >> >> 8 oz. >> 12 oz. >> >> 16 oz. >> The absolute weight of the glass doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold on to it. >> >> If I hold it for a minute, nothing happens. If I hold it for an hour, my arm will begin to ache. If I hold it all day long, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. But, the weight of the glass hasn't changed, but the longer I hold on to it, the heavier it becomes. The stresses and the worries of life are like this glass of water. If you think about them for a little while, there's no problem. Think about it for a little bit longer, it begins to hurt. You think about them all day long, and you'll feel paralyzed, incapable of doing anything. Always remember, put the glass down.
This works. Just not thinking about your problems can genuinely give you less stress. But it’s a thin line. Because if you simply ignore your problems, they obviously won’t disappear. Stress also has a purpose. It gives you energy to fight, take action and fix the things that need fixing. The problem is that sometimes we think way too much about relatively small problems. We replay them in our heads, analyse every possible outcome and slowly make them much bigger than they actually are. And even worse: we worry about things we cannot influence anyway. My solution is pretty simple: Pick your battles. Fix the problems you can fix and should fix. Take action when action is needed. But forget about the problems you don’t have to fix, cannot fix or simply cannot influence. You don’t need to carry everything around in your head all day. Beautiful video. And absolutely true. Free your mind. Which problems are you giving too much attention to right now?
